Our obsession with nail art and all things shellac is about to undergo a clean makeover in 2020, as the popularity of non-toxic manicures continues to grow. Non-toxic manis – which eliminate up to 15 of the most harmful ingredients in traditional nail polishes – are particularly appealing for pregnant women and those undergoing certain medical treatments. ‘When you enter a conventional nail salon you’re usually hit with the heavy smell of acetone and chemicals,’ says Shelly Elson, founder of non-toxic salon Still London. ‘This is not a healthy or relaxing environment for either the client or the nail technician.’ With sustainability and eco-friendliness increasingly at the front of our minds, Elson predicts a non-toxic explosion for 2020. ‘We've had such a great reception this year. I believe we will continue to see a huge increase in vegan and non-toxic products going forward.’

Best for... A Vegan Pedicure
Still-London
Looking for a salon with an all-natural twist? Still might just become your spiritual home. Inside the edgy, East London space it’s all smoky-scented candles and cosy nooks for nail-tidying (plus a gorgeous little treatment room, behind a curtain, where energy balancing massages and reiki takes place). But the pedicures are truly special. Try the Luxury Icelandic Pedicure, which sees feet submerged in a bowl of sustainably-sourced seaweed and herbs, before an invigorating scrub with organic salts and oils. There’s the requisite smoothing and shaping of nails, before a few coats of non-toxic gel polish (followed by a leg and foot massage which is so sublime it seems a shame to have to slide back into shoes). And the wellness store is magical: stocked with vegan beauty products, incense sticks and eye pillows. Don’t expect to leave empty-handed.

Still London opened earlier this year. It joins a burgeoning string of trendy establishments, like PRICK the cactus shop and Brilliant Corners the Sushi-selling bar and nightclub, which populates this stretch of Hackney's Kingsland Road.
Vegan manicures. Chemical-free massages. And low-tech facials. CLAUDIA CONNELL tries the new trend for eco treatments and asks: Is your salon about to be greenwashed?
Claudia Connell gave her verdict on the Still London beauty salon in East London
She says her nails remained glossy despite her manicurist using vegan polish
A £70 facial left her skin dewy and less puffy without using hi-tech tricks
Claudia says it's a way of being pampered without worries of chemical damage
Still London is the brainchild of Shelly Ellson, who worked in interior design before opening her salon in East London. She wanted to create a ‘calm and zen-like’ space for her clients, with the focus on natural and cruelty-free products. (Shelly, of course, walks to work.)
The salon’s right- on credentials are apparent from the moment I enter. It is tastefully decorated in a Scandi-cool vibe: stripped wooden floors and oversized glass ceiling pendants.
On sale are New Age trinkets, including selenite crystals (£18), designed to free your home of negative energy, and, for £5.50, a box of ‘spell candles’ to attract happiness. There’s even a therapist who goes by her spiritual name of Wolf Sister, although she isn’t there the day I visit.
On this occasion, I decide to leave aside the sorcery and go for a manicure, pedicure and something called The Goddess Facial.

I’d never had a manicure before I visited Still London, a stylish salon in Dalston, east London, that focuses on cruelty- and toxic-free beauty. And I’m glad I waited because, well, my first time was rather special.
The boutique salon opened earlier this year, with a quest to meet the growing demand for vegan, cruelty-free and natural nail treatments, and a focus on wellness. It is small and perfectly formed, with gloriously trendy interiors filled with succulents, marble, beautiful products and an incredible scent (Angan’s Seaweed Bathsalts smells just magical) that welcomes and calms while you sit back and have your nails prepped for the big day. And, with reiki, massage and facials on the treatment menu, as well as laid-back surrounds, it’s an ideal space to unwind, too.

CRYSTAL HEALING......................
STILL London is a new vegan, non-toxic, holistic nail studio and crystal house located in Dalston, East London. They are rightly committed to creating a 100% cruelty-free salon and only source brands that commit to keeping the environment and sustainability issue at the forefront of their production. To say that STILL is an upmarket nail-bar would be doing it a disservice as it’s so much more than that. Beautifully designed, (no surprise that owner Shelley has a background in interiors) there are manicure and pedicure stations as well as cabinets hosting an abundance of pretty crystals for sale. The vibe is buzzy and friendly and feels like a very positive addition to the neighbourhood.
I’m here for a High Vibe Facial performed by ‘free spirit therapist’ Daisy who is an advocate for holistic wellness and natural medicine. As she explains in my pre-treatment consultation, she’ll be focussing on nature’s ingredients, using crystals and energy healing. She takes me through an array of gadgets that she’ll be using, from jade rollers and reflexology crystal pens through to Gua-Sha tools and actual crystals that she’ll lay on my body as required. I get cosy on the bed and Daisy gets to work. She starts with a double cleanse and exfoliation and applies serums and masks using her holistic tools of the trade. It’s unbelievably relaxing and during the gentle facial and head massage I can’t help but fall asleep. I wake myself up with a snort but I’m glad that I do as I have a classic FOMO when it comes to facials like this. I relax so deeply that sleep calls, yet I don’t want to miss a moment of it.
Daisy performs some Reiki on me next and despite her hands being near, but not on me, I feel some incredible tingling sensations and at one point feel like I’ve started to float above the bed! Once the treatment ends I have the opposite feeling like I’ve sunk so far into the bed I’ve actually become it and there is no way I can ever leave the salon. Daisy works some kind of magic over me and, once I’ve been encouraged to get up from the bed, explains that she sensed a strong feminine and maternal energy from me. She said that I give a lot out but don’t receive enough back in return. I couldn’t agree more and instantly buy a rose quartz crystal as a present to myself on the way out.
It’s pretty hard to face the real world and jump on the train when I leave the salon as I feel somewhat ethereal and that I’m floating rather than walking up Kingsland Road. My skin is glowing too and the facial massage and reflexology have given a definite lift to both my face and my spirits. When I get home and glance at my FitBit app it proclaims “you seem to have napped today for 1 hour 25 minutes”, it’s not far from the truth!
Well worth the trip; if you are looking for some tip-top nail art, or the most spiritual facial in town, STILL London is the place to go.

Tranquility is the last thing you’d expect to encounter in Dalston but that’s exactly what STILL London is; a slice of peace on an otherwise bustling street. Since its quiet opening earlier this year, the inconspicuous spot has drawn in East Londoners with its crystal laden window displays of Sao Paulo incense and jade rollers galore.

That all changed, however, when I heard about the treatments on offer at Dalston‘s newly-opened STILL London salon. The holistic studio specializes in non-toxic, cruelty-free, vegan and environmentally friendly massages, manicures and pedicures.
Although they sound excellent, it was the High Vibe Facial that caught my eye – it brought with it the promise of aligned chakras, cleansed auras and crystals – frankly, I was fascinated.
